Yoga Therapy a Wholistic Approach

Yoga Therapy is becoming more recognized within the health and wellness service provider networks. There are a few organizations that certify yoga therapists which grants access to the professional body of knowledge and authorization to provide services under their professional and ethical guidelines. The training and study to become a yoga therapist takes a lot of dedicated study, practice and practical experience in delivering this type of service. The certification process is also somewhat complex because the requirements to become certified set a very high standard for those interested in pursuing this career path.

In my experience, I find the value and the benefits of both the certification process and the practical aspects of being a yoga therapist. In this area of specialized yoga service, you spend more time understanding conditions of the mind-body-spirit and applying the recommended yoga practices towards helping reduce the effects of the given condition.

Yoga therapy goes beyond just considering one condition that is presenting, it is about understanding a holistic view of a person’s life that prevents the natural healing processes to take place. We should try to understanding the accumulating symptoms that may overlap and lead to the presenting condition and if the prominent symptoms have a deeper root cause. If the root cause could be reduced or eliminated then some relief and healing can begin.

Yoga therapists are not medical doctors and it is important for anyone seeing a yoga therapist to consult their primary doctor in advance. Yoga therapists are trained yoga teachers, and have gained additional knowledge and experience that takes a more holistic approach to mind body wellness using yoga and may include meditation, breathing techniques, diet and food preparation, affirmations, essential oils and other methodologies, such as restorative yoga, Ayurveda, and mindfulness stress reduction practices for trauma based conditions such as post-traumatic stress syndrome.
