Mind-Body Balance

Is it necessary to meditate in order to achieve Mind-Body Balance? This is a question that only each individual can answer because our lives are moving in so many different directions. Some people are working multiple jobs, or travel frequently away from home, others are pushing hard toward a goal to startup a new business or finish school. Many are working out at the gym or outside in nature. With so much stress in our fast-paced lives it may seem challenging to make time for meditation. But there is always time because at the fundamental level meditation is about being present. Take a one minute test. Sit quietly, and with eyes open or closed just notice your breath. Feel your body move as you breath. Do not try to adjust the breath, just notice it for one minute. In that time you have stepped into the space called meditation. Well that may seem like an easy task. But the benefit of meditation is cumulative over time. Adding one minute for this basic practice is a great start. This practice can be done almost anywhere. And it is not always necessary to have your eyes closed. Not recommended when driving (of course). Best time would be early morning or just before you retire for the day. It's good to try at the same time each day. And don't worry if you cannot sit for the entire time when you first start. Over time you can gradually increase the amount of time and maybe learn to deepen your meditation practice. Sometimes it is good to practice with a group. This community based meditation has the value of helping you feel connected with others who enjoy the practice. Come to the group session without any expectations, knowing that you are supported and free to ask any questions before or after the meditation session.

I have practiced meditation for many years and still find new levels of awareness each time. There is nothing to do, just be. There is no judgement, it is non-religious, it is non-striving, your achievement is deeply personal but you need not set a goal, just be present and let the practice become natural not a chore. Notice how you feel before and after. Again no judgement, just notice. Once you begin a regular practice you may find that you feel more balanced during stressful times. You may find that you are more attuned to yourself and the natural rhythm of your body and mind. And after a period of regular practice when you are flooded with worrisome thoughts or overloaded by the pace of daily life you may find that are able to lessen their impact on how you feel.

The mindfulness meditation classes at Kanjin Yoga cover basic concepts, with practical examples and exercises in a fun, inviting way to help each student on their meditation journey towards better mind-body balance.
