Learning to let meditation happen takes time and patience. The mind is restless and you may find it challenging to sit for meditation. This is normal when you first start a regular meditation practice. The highly-charged world of action that we live in everyday constantly calls upon us to react and respond to all kinds of external stimulus. The most important thing to understand when starting to meditate is be patient.

You may find it helpful to sit with a group that practises meditation regularly. This can be very supportive and encouraging to someone developing a new meditation practice. Over time you will find settling of the mind and body becomes easier. And the length of time you sit for your practice increases. Yoga enables one to learn to use a deeper awareness of the breath which allows the deeper states of meditation to happen naturally.

A unique neighborhood meditation class is offered weekly at the Kanjin Yoga studio in southeast Seattle's Hillman City neighborhood. The class is open to the community as a pay it forward offering (recommended donation $10). The session is held in a space that offers multiple options for seated meditation; floor cushions, chairs or bench seats. Each session is a silent meditation practice for up to 45 minutes followed by a group discussion. The theme for the discussion is usually a selected mindfulness topic that changes weekly.
