Natural Products Expo West 2014 - Kanjin Yoga's top 10 Pics and Top Prize goes to a Seattle favorite.
This year's three day event was the largest of it's kind on the west coast. The vendors were from well known and new brands connecting with a global audience in sunny Anaheim, California. There were eco-activists such as (1) Rain Forest Action Network helping mega brands reduce their environmental impact from harvesting palm oil in the rain forests, and Certified Organic Cotton clothes and household goods by (2) Under The Canopy. It was nice to meet representatives from mega brands such as (3) Design Essentials natural hair care products and (4) Hero Nutritionals gummy vitamins for adults and kids, along side very new to market owners and their families such as Phil Lapp from (5) Neat a new favorite meat substitute for vegetarian sloppy joes.
There were four floors of products, break out rooms and non-stop interaction that went on into late hours. Sampling and talking with the owners about their stories was one of the best parts of the event. Some of the stories were heartfelt and show just how one idea that helped one family raise awareness for an entire community about the suffering of others and in so doing blossomed into a certified B company committed to using business as a force for good. One example of a B-company that is committed to helping others that I talked with was Tony Daniel of (6) Make A Stand a lemonade drink.
There were many brands from the Pacific Northwest and two that I met both based in Oregon were (7) Big Tree Farms the makers of Coco Hydro (a very eco-friendly answer to coconut water) I hope more yoga studios will give them a try and (8) Alaffia (I buy their product at PCC Market). I enjoy fresh food that can be prepared quickly and sometimes you don't have time to prepare the meal but if you can imagine chef's quality meals that you can reheat in an oven ready bag then you must give (9) LUVO a try, the food was delicious. I do not eat cottage cheese but I know many who do and this one took me by surprise, it was the best tasting cottage cheese and I would mistake it for yogurt if the owners had not been there to tell me otherwise look for this product at your local market it was simply amazing (10) ElliQuark a spoonable fresh cheese.
Each company had a great story and each person representing the company was willing to talk casually from their heart. In the midst of all the chaos I meet many business owners who reminded me of yogis with their calm and confident presence. Look for more from these healthy brands and others who will be coming into your neighborhood markets. Many are already there for you. Let's support them.
